Passion Gets a New Home

The 1600 building is scheduled to be renovated, so Passion needs a new home. Hundreds of students and 3-4 faculty work for 2 years:

  • Meet with Chabot administration repeatedly

  • Go to Facilities committee 9 times

  • Develop and design the space

  • Solicit furniture donations

  • Acquire upcycled and recycled room materials

  • Meet with Student Senate and other campus stakeholders

The SIC is the first space of its kind in the California Community College system. Chabot College, once again, is on the cutting edge of educational change and vision.

Impact of Passion on Campus

Passion and Purpose makes an immediate impact on campus and in the wider community. Passion students spearhead dozens of projects and initiatives from the personal to the political. Soon Passion becomes an initiative hub: faculty, students, administration, and community members all come to Passion to get support for their projects and events.

Creation of Passion Classroom Space

A central philosophical feature of the course is the need for a dedicated space. Jan Novak and Tom deWit work with the Business Division to secure a room in 1600 building.

Creation of Passion and Purpose Class

Inspired by the movie, 15 Chabot students create curriculum for a suite of Passion and Purpose courses: GNST 6, GNST 5A/5B. The courses support students to: investigate their passions; develop effective student success skills; get involved in campus and community initiatives

The sheer number of initiatives, projects, events, and collaborations that Passion and Purpose has created and supported is mind boggling. It numbers in the hundreds. Below is a sampling of

a few of them. To learn more, go to Past Initiatives.

Passion and Purpose Documentary

Chabot student Skye Ontiveros creates

"The Passion Project"--a film that explores how colleges--including teachers, classrooms, and the institution itself--can best support student success. The film inspires the creation of a General Studies course--Passion and Purpose.
